5 Essential Tips for Planning your Next Shoot!

5 Essential Tips for Planning your Next Shoot!

WWINFLORA copy.jpg

For some, the thought of planning a photoshoot can be daunting. Having spent most of your time in the design studio or crunching numbers in the office, the thought of figuring out where to start when needing your collection shot can seem abstract and overwhelming. Space + Light can help you every step of the way. In addition to our Full Service E-Commerce, Lookbook, and Catalog services, we have compiled a list of things to help you in planning your next shoot!

Have any questions regarding any of these steps? Call us today! 213.537.0814

1. CONCEPT

The first step in any project is to find an idea to build your shoot around. Your main focus is always to effectively communicate your brand image. Coming up with something you are truly excited about will yield great images! Are you a brand focusing on activewear? A shoot in the great outdoors, far from the hustle and bustle of the city may be the ticket! Focused on formalwear? Perhaps finding a lavish home in the hills or a banquet hall is more your speed.

Your concept should be something you can describe in a single sentence or less. Terms like "free to roam" or "style after 8pm" are great examples of descriptive terms that can quickly and accurately describe the mood and vibe of your shoot. If you are unable to describe the message of your final product, you probably wont be able to portray it visually either.

2. LOCATION

Your location should flow naturally from your concept. Many fashion shoots take place in a simple studio with a plain black, white, or gray background. This Blank canvas allows you to build your concept simply through styling and posing.

If you are going to shoot on location, pick someplace distinctive. Are you a surf and swim brand? Perhaps a cliff in Malibu with great views would be a great choice. Are you a lifestyle brand? Maybe theres a local bar in a historical building near by that would be the perfect fit.

No matter what you choose, be sure to scout it early. Visit the location and visualize where you will put the model, how it should be lit and otherwise lay out the entire shoot. This un-pressured planning stage will help you and Space + Light stay focused during the shoot, saving you money and ending in more usable shots! Out of Town? Ask about our Location Scouting Services!

3. MODELS

Casting your models is an important step. Though Space + Light is able to conduct a casting with models from the best Agencies in Los Angeles, it will be in your best interest to choose the model that best and most accurately defines your brand. Don't simply choose the most attractive person. If you're selling long formal gowns, you'll probably want someone tall and lean. For swimwear, you may be looking for someone who is both athletic and tan. Having models try on samples from the actual collection you are shooting can help tremendously in determining their eligibility.

Pay attention to the personality and demeanor of the model when casting. Don't push them into being someone they are not, especially if they are inexperienced. If your brand needs someone who is happy and laughing, make sure they have a cheery disposition and good teeth. A withdrawn model should be used for a dark, moody atmosphere.  Give them positive instructions and tell them exactly what you want. Letting the model in on the overall shoot concept will help them move the way you need!

4. WARDROBE

Obviously, the clothes that will be modeled for your fashion lookbook or catalog will be primarily your designs. Sometimes, though, you may need additional pieces to complete a look. For example, if you have a brand that is centered around Women's evening wear, but don't also produce high heels to style with the dresses, then you may have a problem. Luckily, Space + Light provides styling and prep styling services from experienced stylist in Los Angeles. They are highly skilled and able to source clothing and accessories that can bring life and context to your collection. Our Prep stylists are in charge of steaming, pinning and dressing the model throughout the shoot in order to ensure that your garment are shot in the best possible light.

5. HAIR + MAKE-UP

Details like hair and makeup make all the difference between your shoot looking amateur and professional. Bright lights and other variants during the shoot process can wash out your models face and an experienced hair/make-up artist will know what needs to be down to counteract any issues. Their job is not only to initially get the model ready, but keeping them looking their best through the duration of the shoot. Space + Light has a slew of detailed oriented Hair + Makeup artists upon request!

HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR BRAND IMAGE THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY

HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR BRAND IMAGE THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY

A brand is the personality of your company and/ or product created to establish a long-lasting connection between you and your clients or customers. Its no secret that Photographically strong brands have a distinct advantage over their competition. So how can you go about developing your brand image with the help of photography? Space + Light has the answers below!

1. START BRAINSTORMING

Start grabbing photos from wherever you can that have elements coinciding with how you picture your brand. Grab from inspiring competitors, Magazines, Blogs etc. Be aggressive in your editing. You'll initially start out with dozens, if not hundreds, of images, but go through each and decide on how relevant each image really is. The more you can weed out images that don't work as well as others, the more defined your brand will become. Both Pinterest and Tumblr are great resources for both discovering new imagery and organizing your findings.

2. CREATE A PHOTOGRAPHIC  STYLE GUIDE

Once you have edited down the initial images, look for patterns within them and funnel them all into a style guide. Having a visual guide for the type of imagery and mood you are looking for will help keep you and your team on the same page. Communication is key and having a reference point will leave little room for interpretation which will keep everything focused and consistent.

THOUGHT PROCESS FOR CREATING A STYLE GUIDE:

1. What kind of content will you focus on? Portraits? Product? Lifestyle?
2. What kind of story should your Imagery tell?
3. What mood is being conveyed to your Target Market? How should they feel after seeing your imagery?
4. How will your photos be edited and why? ( desaturated, minimal imagery is clean, calm and tasteful, while vibrant, busy imagery can be cinematic and bold. Black and white imagery is often seen as either artistic + raw or refined and elegant)
5. Define key do's and don'ts. (type of models your photograph, colors to emphasis or avoid)

3. TELL A STORY

When choosing an image, be critical. Does this photograph make you feel something when you look at it? Does it draw you in? Your goal should be to create photography that is more than just filler. Your goal should always be to elevate our brand to the next level by more clearly defining your brand image to your customer.

4. USE EXCELLENT QUALITY PHOTOS

This is where Space + Light comes in! Once your Style Guide is in place, you can figure out which photographic elements you want represented in each image. The more vocal you are with us, the better we can get everything set up on our end to meet your needs! Look through your style guide images and Pay attention to the following elements:

Lighting: Soft and Natural or Bold and Harsh? Something in between?
Contrast: The scale of difference between the darks and lights in your image. More contrast often creates a bolder image, though too much contrast can create a rather brash result.
Colors: Choose color elements that will fit in harmoniously with the rest of your branding. If your images are usually muted and delicate, don't go with bold and vibrant colors!
Composition: Think about how you would like your models or product to be showcased in the frame. Are there a strong fore, middle and background for lifestyle/ lookbook shots, or does a flatter, more direct e-commerce style shoot shot in front of a backdrop make more sense for your brand?
Model Mood: Do you want your model to feel more natural and authentic or do you prefer defined posing? Modelesque or every- day?

5. BE CONSISTENT

Brands are created via multiple interactions over time. Once your style guide is created, regularly tell stories associated with your company or product. Over time, your brand will grow stronger and more defined and the image your present will become established in the mind of your clients or customers. Your ultimate goal is for someone to be able to look at an image and, without a caption or context, know it's from your brand!

3 Essential Tips on How to Improve your E-Commerce Efforts!

3 Essential Tips on How to Improve your E-Commerce Efforts!

Great photography is always key when embarking on any e-commerce project, be it your Company's Website, Amazon, Ebay, Gilt, etc. Space + Light has compiled a list of 3 Photography Tips that will improve your customer's overall experience, all of which are integrated into our E-Commerce Photography Packages!

1. SHOW PRODUCT ON-THE-BODY

It has now become the norm to show clothing on a model. On-the-Body shots help aid any size + fit question your customers may have (tip: State model's height + garment size in product description for reference). In each case, it is also worth deciding whether or not to show the full shot of the model or to crop out their face. The latter is a cheaper option as it allows you to forgo hiring hair + makeup artists, but you will have to decide how well it fits into your brand image. All of our E-Commerce Shoot Specials (including the one listed below) include the free, optional use of a Male or Female Fit-Model from our archive who we frequently crop below the nose for our clients. In addition, if you prefer to use more professional Agency Print Models, we are able to conduct a casting of 20+ models, matching your specifications for you to choose from and have staff Hair + Makeup artists available for an additional charge.

2. SHOW MULTIPLE ALTERNATE SHOTS

Offering Multiple Alternative shots will help in displaying additional product benefits to your client, increasing the chance of landing a sale. Does your product zip in the back? Is it reversible? Have a detailed print? Showcasing the Features and versatility, conveying a sense of scale, and displaying as many attributes as possible create a more well rounded presentation of your product for your potential customers. Space + Light has of 14 years of experience in identifying which shots are needed to ensure every piece is sold!

3. SHOW DETAILS

It is important to show close up shots to draw user's attention to key features such as fabric weave, hardware, prints, branding or other detailing. It is an effective way to communicate the unique qualities of any product that may be difficult to describe in copy. Space + Light uses 50+ megapixel cameras which allows us to locate and crop out crucial details in garments in post production from the full images we shoot in studio!
